Cookies on our website

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or phone by websites that you visit. We use cookies on this site to help improve the site and to compile statistics that allow us to understand how users use our site and so help us improve it.

We use cookies in several places – we’ve listed the main cookies used on this site below with more details about why we use them, how long they will last and how to set your preferences.

Statistics (measuring website usage)

We currently use Google Analytics to compile statistics about people who visit the Haringey Council website. Google Analytics uses JavaScript and cookies to monitor how people are using the site. The information typically collected is the IP address of the user (which is anonymised), which pages were visited and for how long, date and time of visit, browser type, search terms etc.

The information we get from Google Analytics helps us ensure this website is meeting users’ needs and to help us understand how we could do it better.

The following cookies are set by Google Analytics:

Google Analytics cookies

Cookie name What it does When it expires
_ga randomly generated number 2 years

For further information on how Google Analytics collects and uses data see the Google Privacy Policy (external link)

Advertising

We use third-party advertising on our site to generate income that helps protect funding for services we deliver to residents.

The Council Advertising Network is responsible for delivering advertising on the Haringey Council website. Please take a moment to read their privacy policy (external link) which includes cookie information and details on how to opt out

The adverts are managed by a Google tool called DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP). DFP uses cookies to track who has seen which adverts and to track how those adverts are performing.

The cookies set by Google DFP are as follows:

Advertising cookies

Cookie name What it does When it expires
__gads an anonymous identifier 2 years
_drt_ randomly generated number 30 minutes
id an anonymous identifier 2 years

Note changing preferences here will not stop you seeing adverts - it just means they will not be targeted in any way (so potentially less relevant). To disable adverts completely it is recommended that you use an ad-blocker on your browser/device.

Please note that other council websites we link to will use different cookies and will also have their own privacy and data protection statements.  For example, the cookies statement for My Account can be found here.
